ADAM ELYASSÈ

The garment in front of you is extraordinary in how it embodies the spirit of a people who, like the wind, transcend all borders.

Moving beyond the biographical narrative of the Moroccan diaspora in the United Kingdom, this project represents a borderless humanity, capable of crossing any division.

Khāmsin - a hot, dry, and dusty wind blowing from the Sahara Desert across Egypt and parts of the Middle East. It carries cultural and historical significance, often symbolising transformation, tension, or hardship in local literature and folklore. For Adam Elyassé, ITS Contest 2021 finalist, it becomes a metaphor for his personal diaspora, a life split between London and southern Morocco. The risk of losing one’s identity, of no longer seeing or recognising boundaries - just like being caught in a desert storm.

His technically constructed garments - like this one, which can be turned into a tent - are designed to withstand the constant, oppressive battle against the sand in a harsh environment shaped by conflict. A symbolic world of characters lives in Adam’s mind as archetypes of his diaspora. Modular clothing that powerfully combines function, symbolism, and communication.

Now, let’s head towards the next audio guide QR code, next to Gabriele Rosati’s photograph dedicated to the t-shirt, in the ordinary garments section.
