Qianhan Liu
Lull; The Sleep Temple
China 20250313
This collection was conceived as a journey of healing and understanding. A philosophy of peace, sobriety and equality outlining a utopian lifestyle and a yearning for wellness. It draws parallels between two unreachable, over-marketed ideas of the “East”, two nirvanas of stereotypical uniqueness: the generous tailoring of the one-piece cuts, easy jerseys and chunky knitwear of the American East Coast preppy style, and the drapery of the natural textures of the East Asian temple tradition. T-shirts and coats twist like knotted tunics, recycled leather is printed and treated to become antiqued wood, and thousands of fallen leaves - each one laser cut from leather offcuts, singed and stitched by hand - envelop an oversized sweater.
SELECTION MOTIVATION
We were blown away by Qianhan's reference to Eastern traditions and philosophies through her clothes, and the constant play with the material element, turning leather into wood and leaves, working on rigid and fluent draping as if it were a blank page for re-writing aesthetic codes that talk to us about spirituality and the American East Coast. She succeeds in merging two apparently distant worlds in a utopia of her own with a distinctive style and an unquestionable talent for detail and craft.
TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION
