Though fur is gradually being banned and replaced with other materials, there are still tribes in the remote Nordic regions that wear special fur clothing for their festivities, dressing up as the “Wild Man”. They are out of touch with the world, yet deeply connected to nature and still play a role in today's society. This collection looks at the history, production and properties of fur, coming up with sustainable alternatives - which take into consideration other natural materials - and techniques to replace it. These solutions are combined with zoomorphian aesthetics and integrated in menswear design, creating a conversation between nature and fashion.
SELECTION MOTIVATION
The jury were excited by Yifan's approach to a relevant challenge - an attractive and elegant use of fur, faux fur and sustainable materials. By using alternative materials, all quite traditional yet rethought and re-imagined to fire up our brains into thinking about an alternative to fur using the medium of fashion, Yifan was able to create a cohesive, yet strongly narrative collection in just a few looks that everyone agreed was a smart and effective solution that didn't forgo beauty.
TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION
